Luther Wright & The Wrongs

Luther Wright & The Wrongs Guitar Pickin’ Martyrs (Universal) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

All the while Luther Wright was making his countrified version of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and rebuilding it on a nightly basis, he appeared oblivious to the fact that the more successful he was at selling his novelty scheme, the harder time he’d have being taken seriously as a singer/songwriter on any non-novelty recording in the future. Guitar Pickin’ Martyrs is a return to more conventional hayseed hoedowns and heartache, with the best material, like Broken Fuckin’ Heart, possessing the irreverent wit that made the Pink Floyd gimmick so charming. But whether anyone wants to hear Wright’s own songs now remains to be seen.
