MEDESKI, MARTIN and WOOD

MEDESKI, MARTIN and WOOD Univisible (Blue Note) Rating: NN Rating: NN

While Medeski, Martin and Wood are willing to put their Steely Dan dreams on hold for a minute to try for a funkier sound here, they realized that hiring Daptone noise vendor Gabriel Roth would cost them the support of too many Dave Matthews fans, so Scott Harding got the nod. Still, Univisible doesn’t really snap, crackle and pop like it should because everything has been smoothed out on a Laswell-esque voodoo dub tip, including the scratching, which comes off like a dumb afterthought. The grooves are reasonably tight, but next time they should try writing some real songs.
