Mi Ami

Rating: NNNN

This San Francisco trio sounds a bit like if you gave a noise band to a dub reggae producer. The beats are mainly variations and abstractions on reggae, and the processed bass guitar sounds closer to a rubbery synth. Over top of this strangely funky foundation, Daniel Martin-McCormick shrieks and warbles maniacally and occasionally unleashes frightening shards of discordant guitar skronk.

It’s art school punk that you can dance to, which automatically makes Mi Ami more fun than most of their peers. On the downside, the songs tend to blend together into one long, dubbed-out scream over a beat, which is great if you’re into it and probably insufferable if you aren’t.

Top track: The Man In Your House

Mi Ami raise a ruckas during Wavelength 450 at Sneaky Dee’s Sunday (February 15).
