Michael Holt Pilot Single (Fang) Rating: NNn

Rating: NNN

Elegantly arranged, airy and sonically interesting, Pilot Single spirals into a nosedive because of super-sensitive singer/songwriter Holt’s one-track mind. His third disc mines the hackneyed turf of performance insecurities, new love (the obsessive “What is love?” chorus of, yup, What Is Love is particularly cloying) and learning to accept help. It’s sweet that Holt’s partner, Cora, contributes pretty backing vocals, and the songwriting is quite polished, but his lyrics and subject matter need an overhaul. I’m not averse to concept albums, but this is a complete 12-step program in CD form.

Michael Holt launches Pilot Single this Friday (August 22) at Mitzi’s Sister.
