MIKE EVIN

Rating: NNN

For years, Toronto’s Mike Evin has been toiling in the music scene with his piano and a collection of feel-good pop tunes that not enough people know about. His third release, an EP of love songs, won’t make him any more popular, but this cutesy look at romance might warm a few hearts. Opening track The Same Place As You sounds like a piano-playing Jason Collett mixed with a slightly less poppy Matt Murphy, while in Wait Up Evin asks his girl to stay up until he gets home. It’s all very pleasant, but none of it is overly inspiring, and Brush My Teeth With You, while humorous, treads too far into Sharon, Lois & Bram territory. That said, it’s hard to dislike lines like “There’s something about soaking dishes that leads me to your kisses.”

Mike Evin plays Wednesday (February 14) at the Tranzac.
