Mischief & Frankie

Rating: NNNNN

WHERE CAN WE HEAR THEM? The duo play Saturday (April 14), opening up for Mark Farina at the Docks (11 Polson), and next month (May 10) for the Greenskeepers at the Drake (1150 Queen West) .

WHAT DO THEY PLAY? House music, or as they put it, “Funky, jackin’, techy, bumpy, deep house. We don’t really like to be pigeonholed as Chicago house. To us, Chicago isn’t even really a sound — it’s more of a style. It’s the way you layer tracks and get aggressive with the mix. We could be playing a real deep cut with some nice vocals on it, but then all of a sudden hit it with a really jackin’ Cajmere-style beat.”

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS? “Headlining a party in Chicago last December. That meant so much to us, playing in the city our style is influenced by, and to be received with such incredible praise was just amazing. A very close, and I mean close tie, is probably X-tend New Year’s Eve at 270 Spadina (formerly Boa) in 2004 and 05, where we played extended three-hour sets. There was something very special about that lounge.”

HOW DID THEY END UP AS A DUO? Well, they are cousins, and both started out playing hiphop back in the 90s before discovering house and deciding to perform together.
