Moderat

Rating: NNNN

The name Moderat is a portmanteau of Modeselektor and Apparat, two collaborating German IDM artists. An earlier 2002 collaboration between Apparat’s ethereal shoegazer style and Modeselektor’s Aphex Twin-inspired club beats fizzled, but this time the groups find an arrangement that works.

The result is pragmatic but also quite creative and surprisingly catchy. Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary of Modeselektor crank out beefy electro rhythms that still leave room for Apparat’s Sascha Ring to sprinkle his celestial synth parts over top. It’s mostly instrumental, though Ring sings on Rusty Nails. Slow Match and Porc #2 provide the most party-ready fare.
