When Mother Mother released Touch Up in 2007, critics somewhat surprisingly heralded them as the next big Canadian thing. While the record was good, it was a mishmash of genres – folk, pop, jazz – that never really made sense.
Their sophomore effort, O My Heart, does everything Touch Up didn’t. It focuses on one type of sound: New Pornographers-like pop. Some may think the originality of Touch Up is gone, but it’s not it just takes another form. The songs are relatively straightforward, but Mother Mother’s layers of harmonies, complex choruses and sheer energy easily make this disc one of the best of the year.
