Opposite-sex sibling bands can be a bit strange. From the Carpenters to the Fiery Furnaces, something always seems off about it. Maybe it’s because my sister and I would probably break up before we ever agreed on a band name.
The Guldemonds appear to have a more stable relationship. Synchronic even, as Ryan and Molly’s vocals seamlessly intertwine throughout the Vancouver group’s debut. It just sounds like one androgynous-sounding voice after a while, which works well in this case. Debra-Jean Creelman (piano/vocals), Jeremy Page (bass, various saxes) and drummer Kenton Loewen add their own to each track, but it’s the Guldemonds’ creative vocal play that gives Touch Up its strength.
Mother Mother rock the Boat tonight (Thursday, June 7) at 9 pm.
