NOMADIC MASSIVE

Rating: NNN

A declaration of independence and mission statement sparks the beginning of this CD, and DJ Static slashes up some samples in a manner that would make DJ Premier smile before the actual songs start. Nofy’s Peace is a flavourful stew of music with English, French and Creole ingredients a palatable balance of these elements is cooked up over some springy low-end pulses and a silky Latin guitar. Passports And Suitcases works within a similar structure, feeling more subdued as a second serving, dulling the sharpness of their observations.

But momentum is quickly regained as OWD (Oil, Weapons, Drugs) lurches forward with jangly keys and a rubber bass line bump while the chorus’s sly sarcasm is seared onto a sweet saxophone lick and sharp lyrics. On Nèg Chanté, in Creole once again, the MCs flow with ease over the Fugees-like funk before various remixes and love songs finally take us home.
