Nouvelle Vague

Rating: NNNN

With all the nostalgic interest in 80s punk and new wave, it’s surprising that there haven’t been more loungey covers concept albums like the Nouvelle Vague set, which presents bossa-lite revisions of your favourite tunes by the Clash, Public Image Limited, the Cure, Depeche Mode and Killing Joke sweetly crooned Claudine Longet-style with a vaguely French lilt. Admittedly, not all of it works, but when it clicks – as with Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart and the Dead Kennedys’ Too Drunk To Fuck – the results are highly entertaining. Soon to be as common in hipster hangouts as surly staff and overpriced martinis.
