by Giuseppe Verdi (Canadian Opera Company). The Shakespearean tragedy is sung in Italian with English surtitles. Opens Apr 27 and runs to May 21, see website for schedule. $35-$350 (under 30 from $22).
Its hard to imagine a more effective staging of Verdis opera than the COCs current production. Under director David Alden, villain Iago (Gerald Finley, at the height of his powers) hovers over and around the action, manipulating Otello (Russell Thomas), Desdemona (Tamara Wilson) and Cassio (Andrew Haji) to their inevitable tragedies. Under Johannes Debus and chorus master Sandra Horst, the orchestra and chorus bring out all the drama and nuance in the score, resulting in music theatre of the highest order.
