PETER KATZ

Rating: NNN

From acting in Fringe festivals to scoring dance productions and finally eking out a career as an axe-wielding folkie, Peter Katz clearly has a need to stay creative.

Like his career, his latest release tries to accomplish a lot. While More Nights is grounded by folk themes and an acoustic guitar, Katz’s voice and songwriting are all over the map.

On Forgiveness, a passionate solo effort, the Torontonian emulates Adam Duritz a little too closely, while These Are The Days could be a stripped-down Rufus Wainwright B-side. The comparisons continue from there – a little Paul Simon here, a little Coldplay there. He probably should have studied his record collection a little less intently.

Of course, everyone steals from their favourite artists here and there, and in the end, the record has enough catchy material to stand on its own. But it’s clear Katz is still finding his way through his most recent creative pursuit.

Peter Katz plays the Rivoli June 23.
