SUMMARY:Building Black AMORPHIA: Spiritual Starships
DESCRIPTION:The latest series from Ghanaian-Canadian multidisciplinary artist and LEGO® sculptor\, Ekow Nimako. \nThe 16 new artworks in this series thread together elements of West African mask-making traditions\, science fiction\, geometric figures and interstellar vessels to create an amorphous futuristic tapestry. The interlacing of natural elements and the primary geometric forms often associated with LEGO® evoke an aesthetic that is at times haunting\, futuristic and simultaneously traditional. \nThe sculptures are influenced by the cultural\, spiritual and political roles of masks in West African societies\, as well as the symbolism they inherit of coming of age\, death\, birth and rebirth. The works embrace the particular challenge of articulating mood\, expression and movement in the mounted visage of a mask. Familiar silhouettes take unpredictable\, exciting turns\, inspired by the evolving artistic tradition of Afrofuturism and the deliberate repurposing of both conventional and unconventional LEGO® elements. From a conceptual perspective\, Nimako envisions the sculptures as biotechnological ancestral spacecrafts\, whose cosmic journeys predate archetypal sci-fi narratives. This framing is significant since dominant worldbuilding tropes often rely on racialized cultural aesthetics\, while depriving their constructed universes of textured\, ethnic cohabitants.

SUMMARY:Shokkan: Japanese Art through the Sense of Touch at ROM
DESCRIPTION:This groundbreaking ROM-original exhibition explores the profound connection between Japanese objects and the human sense of touch\, known as shokkan—a vital element in the creation and appreciation of Japanese art. Transcending the tactile sensations felt at the fingertips\, shokkan is the combination of memories\, language\, and other senses like sight and sound. \nThis first-of-its-kind exhibition showcases over 100 objects\, including textiles\, armour\, paintings\, lacquer works\, ceramics\, prints\, and contemporary art\, many of which are integral to everyday life rather than solely for display. From the intricate texture of a matcha tea bowl to the “imagined touch” of a woodblock print\, be inspired by the exquisite and innovative craftsmanship through encounters with touchable objects and hands-on experiences that allow you to fully appreciate Japanese art.

SUMMARY:Close to Home
DESCRIPTION:In the early twentieth century members of the Group of Seven rose to prominence for their expressive landscape paintings of remote places across Canada\, making now iconic works in Algoma\, the Rocky Mountains\, the Artic\, and beyond. But not all of their dazzling works were made in these far-off places. Several members of the Group found inspiration in rural sites across Southern Ontario\, sometimes painting in our own backyard. \nClose to Home brings together paintings\, drawings\, and prints created in and around Kleinburg\, Vaughan\, Thornhill\, North York\, Markham\, Bolton\, Orillia\, Barrie\, and neighbouring locales. These works reflect the deep connections several Group members had to the region: J.E.H. MacDonald\, Arthur Lismer\, and Fred Varley all lived for a time in Thornhill; Franklin Carmichael grew up in Orillia and later lived in Lansing (North York); and Lawren Harris’s family maintained a property at Allandale on Lake Simcoe. From these vantage points\, the artists produced bold\, colourful works both en plein air and in their studios\, often focusing on agricultural life\, brilliant autumn foliage\, and the ever-changing southern Ontario sky.

SUMMARY:Land. Sea. Sugar. Salt.
DESCRIPTION:Land. Sea. Sugar. Salt.: Terrestrial and Aquatic Contemplations of the Caribbean offers a space of reflection about the Caribbean through the work of eleven artists\, who continue to have familial and lived ties to the region. Each of the works speaks to an intimate engagement with the land\, sharing a way of knowing it through physical experience and embodied knowledge. The work attests to the ways in which Caribbean communities resist\, adapt\, and create—sustaining powerful traditions of solidarity\, cultural expression\, and environmental care in the wake of the pressures of colonial legacies\, social and economic inequity\, and environmental incursions and climate change.   \nFeaturing works by Alexandre Arrechea\, Charles Campbell\, Carolina Caycedo\, Giana De Dier\, Braxton Garneau\, Deborah Jack\, Las Nietas de Nonó\, Hew Locke\, Farihah Aliyah Shah\, and Kara Springer. \nThe exhibition is circulated by Remai Modern with the support of the Frank & Ellen Remai Foundation. \n— Image: Las Nietas de Nonó\, en el lugar de sal\, 2018. SUMMARY:Old Growth: Masterworks by the Group of Seven & Contemporaries
DESCRIPTION:Old Growth invites visitors to experience the McMichael’s most iconic and enduring treasures\, artworks that have shaped the way generations have seen and felt the Canadian experience. \nLike the towering trees of an old-growth forest\, these works are deeply rooted in the country’s cultural memory and foundational to the McMichael’s identity. Featuring masterworks by canonical artists such as Tom Thomson\, Lawren Harris\, Emily Carr\, A.Y. Jackson\, and J.E.H. MacDonald\, the exhibition is organized geographically\, bringing visitors on a journey from the forests of Algoma to the peaks of the Rockies to the Arctic tundra. \nThese beloved works are essential to the story of the art of Canada\, but they are also part of a larger\, evolving conversation. Old Growth also includes works by often-overlooked contemporaries of the Group of Seven\, like Anne Savage\, Kathleen Daly Pepper\, and Bess Harris. Their contributions enrich the familiar narrative and will be a great discovery for many. Taking this broader lens\, Old Growth offers a more expansive understanding of Canadian art: one that honours the past while making room for other voices and perspectives.

SUMMARY:PRESERVATION
DESCRIPTION:Volcano presents Preservation\, an exhibition of new multidisciplinary artworks by four internationally-acclaimed Palestinian artists: dancer and choreographer Marah Haj; filmmaker Moaz Hosni; installation and multidisciplinary artist Shahd Itbakhi; and photographer Hosny Salah. Commissioned by Volcano\, and curated by theatre maker and Volcano Associate Artist\, Rimah Jabr\, Preservation seeks to foreground the points of view of artists at risk of erasure due to war\, genocide\, and/or targeted violence. The exhibition can be viewed at The Theatre Centre (1115 Queen St. W.) from March 19 to May 17\, 2026\, and access is free of charge. The work will also be available online as of April 10. \nRather than presenting Palestinian identity as monolithic or reductionist\, Preservation strives to draw upon the region’s multifaceted diversity – of history\, culture\, class\, religion\, and ethnicity – alongside a consideration of life under duress that might not be anticipated by the Canadian viewer. The work aims to give audiences perspective on Palestinian life from Palestinian artists\, outside of a western-media lens. \nThis iteration of Preservation is intended as the first in a series that will draw upon the points of view of artists in crisis zones across the globe.
