SUMMARY:Old Growth: Masterworks by the Group of Seven & Contemporaries
DESCRIPTION:Old Growth invites visitors to experience the McMichael’s most iconic and enduring treasures\, artworks that have shaped the way generations have seen and felt the Canadian experience. \nLike the towering trees of an old-growth forest\, these works are deeply rooted in the country’s cultural memory and foundational to the McMichael’s identity. Featuring masterworks by canonical artists such as Tom Thomson\, Lawren Harris\, Emily Carr\, A.Y. Jackson\, and J.E.H. MacDonald\, the exhibition is organized geographically\, bringing visitors on a journey from the forests of Algoma to the peaks of the Rockies to the Arctic tundra. \nThese beloved works are essential to the story of the art of Canada\, but they are also part of a larger\, evolving conversation. Old Growth also includes works by often-overlooked contemporaries of the Group of Seven\, like Anne Savage\, Kathleen Daly Pepper\, and Bess Harris. Their contributions enrich the familiar narrative and will be a great discovery for many. Taking this broader lens\, Old Growth offers a more expansive understanding of Canadian art: one that honours the past while making room for other voices and perspectives.

SUMMARY:PRESERVATION
DESCRIPTION:Volcano presents Preservation\, an exhibition of new multidisciplinary artworks by four internationally-acclaimed Palestinian artists: dancer and choreographer Marah Haj; filmmaker Moaz Hosni; installation and multidisciplinary artist Shahd Itbakhi; and photographer Hosny Salah. Commissioned by Volcano\, and curated by theatre maker and Volcano Associate Artist\, Rimah Jabr\, Preservation seeks to foreground the points of view of artists at risk of erasure due to war\, genocide\, and/or targeted violence. The exhibition can be viewed at The Theatre Centre (1115 Queen St. W.) from March 19 to May 17\, 2026\, and access is free of charge. The work will also be available online as of April 10. \nRather than presenting Palestinian identity as monolithic or reductionist\, Preservation strives to draw upon the region’s multifaceted diversity – of history\, culture\, class\, religion\, and ethnicity – alongside a consideration of life under duress that might not be anticipated by the Canadian viewer. The work aims to give audiences perspective on Palestinian life from Palestinian artists\, outside of a western-media lens. \nThis iteration of Preservation is intended as the first in a series that will draw upon the points of view of artists in crisis zones across the globe.

SUMMARY:THE SKY DOES NOT BEND: OSHEEN HARRUTHOONYAN
DESCRIPTION:Solo fine art photography exhibition \nat The Cardinal Gallery located at 1231 Davenport Road\, Toronto \nMarch 21-May 17\, 2026. \nOPENING NIGHT RECEPTION WITH ARTIST IN ATTENDANCE: \nSATURDAY\, MARCH 21\, 2026 \n6:00-9:00pm \nVisit www.thecardinalgallery.ca to sign up \n \nThe sky does not bend. It stretches above everything—unchanging\, distant\, sometimes heavy with its stillness. \nAs a child growing up during the Iran-Iraq war\, and later as a refugee in Greece\, the world beneath that sky was constantly shifting. Cities changed. Languages folded into one another. Familiar things disappeared\, and new ones appeared without warning. \nUnder a sky that did not move\, imagination became a way to live inside many worlds at once. \nSome of this work returns to those early fragments of memory. Folding Patterns emerges from a small ritual during our refugee years in Athens. I gathered cardboard from the streets\, and sometimes my Mother and I found paper sewing patterns which she used to make shirts for my father. Those patterns were always spread across the table—quiet\, precise\, and patient. \nDecades later\, photographing their folds and textures became a way of tracing migration through small material traces: cardboard\, fabric\, creases\, and time. They are modest records of movement and survival. \nOther images move into a more dreamlike terrain. Ghostly figures appear as echoes of memory—presences that feel both distant and close. \nAnimals drift through these landscapes as quiet symbols. A crane glides through time\, suggesting continuity and eternity. A crow embodies the intelligence of adaptation\, learning how to survive and remake its world again and again. Owls watch silently at the edges of perception. \nTogether these figures inhabit a space between memory and imagination. \nThe sky may not bend. But the worlds beneath it fold\, fracture\, merge\, echo out and open—allowing infinite possibilities to coexist across loss\, discovery\, delight\, and wonder. \n-Photography Osheen Harruthoonyan

SUMMARY:Glorious Catastrophe by Gillian Iles
DESCRIPTION:Koffler Arts welcomes Toronto artist Gillian Iles to the Koffler Gallery to present her exhibition\, Glorious Catastrophe (March 26 – June 7\, 2026). In this exhibition\, Iles delves into the chaos of the current moment by exploring paradoxical themes of devastation\, wonder\, precarity\, power\, dereliction\, and glory. \nThe installation\, which includes paintings\, sculptures\, videos\, and projections\, inhabits the entire gallery space. Much of the work is precariously installed\, gesturing toward the fragility of the world right now. Paintings on Tyvek and glassine are strung up with thread\, and furniture pieces rest on tea cups. \nGlorious Catastrophe has three parts: the one-eyed man is king and Not like the other are companion pieces that explore ideas of us and them\, using the metaphor of a hunting blind. the one-eyed man is king places the viewer outside the blind\, akin to the role of a target. Not like the other brings the viewer inside the blind\, looking out at images framed by the geometric shapes of the windows. All and nothing juxtaposes contradictory moments – the confluence of the glorious and catastrophic. Iles includes international and local references through a metaphoric lens\, from the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona\, Spain to the 2025 Central Texas floods to Toronto’s encampments during the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe dualities present in the exhibition speak to a world in division\, while capturing a suspended moment in which outcomes are yet to be determined\, and an opportunity for something different or better remains in the air. Throughout\, there is an allure of intersections\, potentials\, and the mysteries they contain. \n \nLearn more about related programs for this exhibition here. \nFor media inquiries please contact: Laura Chapnick-Klein lchapnick@kofflerarts.org

SUMMARY:Fresh Air: New Acquisitions in Context
DESCRIPTION:Acquisitions breathe new life into museum collections. Fresh Air presents a selection of the McMichael’s recent acquisitions\, presented in dynamic dialogue with long-held works from the collection. This exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the art of Canada through unexpected juxtapositions and thematic groupings that inspire curiosity\, reflection and delight. \nFeaturing artists such as Tim Whiten\, Howie Tsui\, and Dana Claxton\, Fresh Air expands the story of Canadian art to include a wider range of voices\, materials\, and approaches. Themes of cultivation\, belonging\, and landscape are explored from diverse and unexpected perspectives. Works by Frederick Varley\, J.E.H. MacDonald\, and A.J. Casson appear alongside new additions to the collection by Ben Reeves\, Sky Glabush\, and Brenda Draney\, creating moments of connection and surprise. \nThe McMichael’s collection is a living\, breathing conversation—one that delights in the resonances that appear when old and new are allowed to intermingle. Fresh Air is an invitation to see the McMichael’s collection anew\, and to imagine its future as one that reflects the full richness of the country’s artistic landscape.

SUMMARY:Zinnia Naqvi & Shahana Rajani: Island of Strangers
DESCRIPTION:In British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s White Paper strategy on immigration\, he warned that without stronger integration “we risk becoming an island of strangers.” Working with found photography and personal memory\, Naqvi traces her own experiences with migration\, and her relationship\, from a very young age\, to belonging\, and its reduction to a measure of utility: questioning which bodies are valued\, which are excluded. \nThe Arabic word for universe\, alam\, and the word for knowledge\, ilm\, share their origin in the word alamah\, a mark. In this exhibition\, Rajani explores practices and lineages of drawing and mark-making through which coastal communities in Pakistan remain connected to sacred ecologies of rivers and sea amidst the violence and erasure of infrastructure. Rajani intertwines old and new practices of drawing talismans and making river maps as echoing rituals that protect\, invoke and keep alive endangered worlds.

SUMMARY:How to Catch Creation
DESCRIPTION:The only way to find your voice is to use it. \nIn San Francisco\, four artists and intellectuals wrestle with creativity\, legacy\, and the complexities of love and family. Griffin\, a Black writer newly freed after more than a decade in prison for a crime he didn’t commit\, is determined to reclaim his future. Tami\, a driven art professor\, feels her creative fire slipping. Stokes\, a young painter\, searches for purpose\, while his partner Riley longs to find where she belongs. When they uncover the work of a Black queer feminist writer from the 1960s\, her words ripple across time\, intertwining their lives in unexpected ways. \nBold and imaginative\, Christina Anderson’s latest work explores the power of artistic expression and the lasting impact of those who dare to create. A story for dreamers and idealists alike\, it challenges us to reconsider who gets remembered and who gets to define the future.

SUMMARY:WAAC Members in Focus: part of the city-wide CONTACT Photography
DESCRIPTION:WAAC Members in Focus showcases the creativity and range of photographic work being produced by members of the Women’s Art Association of Canada (WAAC). \nFrom intimate encounters in the natural world to layered urban narratives\, the exhibition brings together diverse perspectives in a thoughtful and engaging celebration of image-making. \nPresented as part of the CONTACT Photography Festival\, WAAC Members in Focus features 29 WAAC artists\, and visitors are invited to experience the many ways photographers observe\, frame\, and interpret the world around them. Spanning moments of quiet observation to striking visual contrasts\, from interplay between presence and passage\, moving between the immediacy of the natural world and the constructed rhythms of urban environments. \nViewers are invited to consider how meaning is shaped through attention\, contrast\, and perspective. \nThese works reflect a shared commitment to storytelling through the lens. \nFeatured Works Include: \nLeopardess Drinking\, Chobe Botswana by Jonathan Ward (top left): A close\, unguarded encounter with wildlife captures a leopard at the water’s edge: its focused gaze and poised stillness revealing both vulnerability and instinct within the natural world. \nShips Passing in the Night by Judith Davidson-Palmer (top right): A stark black-and-white urban passageway frames two figures moving toward and away from one another\, emphasizing isolation\, rhythm\, and the quiet choreography of city life. \nEverything We Thought\, We Always Knew by Sabrina Leeder (bottom left): A late-night streetscape illuminated by neon signage captures the atmosphere of a familiar neighbourhood landmark\, where light\, colour\, and shadow evoke a sense of place and memory. \nBuilding at King & Roncesvalles by Ulla Djelweh (bottom right): An urban facade layered with fire escapes\, shadows\, and painted surfaces transforms everyday architecture into a dynamic composition of pattern\, texture\, and overlooked detail.
