SUMMARY:September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill - Restoration Screening
DESCRIPTION:September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill is a fusion of film\, theatre\, and concert performance that reimagines the music of the German composer Kurt Weill whose songs bridged opera\, cabaret\, and popular music with piercing social and emotional insight. \nFeaturing an extraordinary ensemble—Teresa Stratas\, Lou Reed\, Nick Cave\, PJ Harvey\, Charlie Haden\, Elvis Costello & The Brodsky Quartet\, Betty Carter\, Mary Margaret O’Hara\, William S. Burroughs\, and more—September Songs transforms Weill’s work into a haunting collage of performance\, theatre\, and cinema. Each artist reinvents Weill’s legacy through their own lens\, creating a living dialogue between past and present\, exile and belonging\, beauty and decay. Blended throughout the film are stylized “documentaries\,” evocative imagery\, and cinematic transitions that transform Weill’s haunting melodies and biting social commentary into a contemporary meditation on art\, exile\, and the human condition. The film celebrates Weill’s enduring influence on 20th-century music and culture. \nThrough its visuals\, its music and its original choreography\, the film merges concert\, cabaret\, and expressionist cinema into a single dreamlike experience. This restoration\, undertaken by Sphinx Productions with the generous support of Telefilm Canada\, faithfully revives the film’s original textures\, sound design\, and the distinctive cinematography of celebrated German director of photography Horst Zeidler\, preserving a landmark of Canadian music cinema for new audiences worldwide. \nIn English and German\, with English subtitles. \nScreening preceded by acoustic set by Judith Lander and Jefferey McLeod. Following the screening there will be a Q&A with director Larry Weinstein\, moderated by film critic Jason Gorber. \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE

SUMMARY:Indigenous Food Lab by Chef Taylor Parker
DESCRIPTION:The Depanneur is proud to host the Indigenous Food Lab\, a monthly residency with Chef Taylor Parker and his team. It is designed as place to experiment with the possibilities of a dining experience rooted in First Nations traditions\, a laboratory to explore a Canadian concept of terroir – the flavour of a place — and help rediscover and redefine what Indigenous food was\, is\, and could be. \nChef Taylor’s sophisticated tasting menus celebrate local and foraged ingredients\, and a deep connection to First Nations foodways\, to the seasons and land\, each meal showcasing ingredients native to Ontario. Weather\, timing\, season\, and the caprice of Mother Nature will determine exactly what will be shared with us. Whatever comes to the table\, you can be assured that it will be crafted with skill and creativity of a veteran chef. \nWe live in the largest city in Canada\, one of the most ethnically and culinarily diverse cities in the world. One can find almost any dish from almost any cuisine\, with one glaring\, egregious exception: the country we actually live in. Indigenous food is criminally underrepresented in Toronto’s food scene\, without a single Indigenous-owned restaurant for people to patronize. More than ever before\, Canada needs to embrace and celebrate its indigenous culinary heritage\, and I believe the long path towards reconciliation can and should start at the table. \n—– \nBOOK NOW! – $99 + HST – https://thedepanneur.ca/products/supper-club-indigenous-food-lab-by-chef-taylor-parker-sep26 \n—–Chef Taylor Parker is of the Mohawk Nation\, Bear Clan\, from Six Nations of the Grand River. \nTaylor is a proud father\, chef\, forager\, gardener\, and friend. His extensive knowledge of native North American plants brings rarely seen ingredients and flavours to his dishes\, with the philosophy that food is a conduit to connect people back to the land. Taylor is passionate about bringing like-minded Chefs together to share\, educate\, and collaborate on unique dishes that seek to define modern First Nations North American Cuisine. Taylor is proud to work alongside fellow cooks and friends Phil Magtulis\, Matthew Kleinsteuber\, and Tara Sachs at The Depanneur dinner series. \nTaylor has spent much of his professional life working in a diverse range of kitchens and catering. He currently consults and offers private dining experiences focused on First Nations inspired\, hunt\, fished and foraged ingredients. Taylor is also the co-owner of For4ged Candle Company in Brantford\, Ontario. @turok_parker \n—–Every weekend The Depanneur invites an amateur or professional guest chef to host a fun\, informal dinner party. @thedepanneur

SUMMARY:Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie
DESCRIPTION:More than 30 years after Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa\, a religious decree calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie over the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses\, Rushdie traveled to Chautauqua to speak about the United States as a sanctuary for exiled writers and artists. The event marked the 20th anniversary of a writer-refuge program—a setting meant to celebrate safety and creative freedom. It was there that a young man rushed the stage\, intent on killing him with a knife. Using excerpts from Rushdie’s works\, including his powerful memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder\, Alex Gibney’s documentary is both a striking testament to freedom of expression and a defiant response to the attempt on Rushdie’s life. \nThe film incorporates never-before-seen footage shot by Rushdie’s wife\, Rachel Eliza Griffiths\, in the days and weeks following the attack. This material offers a graphic\, unflinching\, and deeply intimate account of what happened\, including archival footage of Rushdie’s early career and rise to literary fame\, the controversy surrounding The Satanic Verses\, and events leading up to the attempted murder. It also traces Rushdie’s physical and spiritual recovery\, including the challenges he continues to face\, from losing an eye to the reduced use of one hand. \nKnife blends reportage with fictionalized dialogues to explore the mindset of the attacker\, probing the “why” behind the violence. At its core\, the film is a portrait of resilience\, of Rushdie’s own extraordinary strength and the love that carried him through this ordeal\, and a call to action against censorship and hatred. It argues that art itself can be a form of resistance. \nIn Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie\, Gibney\, working with longtime collaborators Andy Grieve (editor) and Will Bates (composer)\, crafts a poetic dreamscape that reflects how Rushdie views his writing as his own “knife\,” a tool to fight back\, reclaim his story\, and respond to violence with imagination and art. \n \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE
