SUMMARY:Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie
DESCRIPTION:More than 30 years after Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa\, a religious decree calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie over the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses\, Rushdie traveled to Chautauqua to speak about the United States as a sanctuary for exiled writers and artists. The event marked the 20th anniversary of a writer-refuge program—a setting meant to celebrate safety and creative freedom. It was there that a young man rushed the stage\, intent on killing him with a knife. Using excerpts from Rushdie’s works\, including his powerful memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder\, Alex Gibney’s documentary is both a striking testament to freedom of expression and a defiant response to the attempt on Rushdie’s life. \nThe film incorporates never-before-seen footage shot by Rushdie’s wife\, Rachel Eliza Griffiths\, in the days and weeks following the attack. This material offers a graphic\, unflinching\, and deeply intimate account of what happened\, including archival footage of Rushdie’s early career and rise to literary fame\, the controversy surrounding The Satanic Verses\, and events leading up to the attempted murder. It also traces Rushdie’s physical and spiritual recovery\, including the challenges he continues to face\, from losing an eye to the reduced use of one hand. \nKnife blends reportage with fictionalized dialogues to explore the mindset of the attacker\, probing the “why” behind the violence. At its core\, the film is a portrait of resilience\, of Rushdie’s own extraordinary strength and the love that carried him through this ordeal\, and a call to action against censorship and hatred. It argues that art itself can be a form of resistance. \nIn Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie\, Gibney\, working with longtime collaborators Andy Grieve (editor) and Will Bates (composer)\, crafts a poetic dreamscape that reflects how Rushdie views his writing as his own “knife\,” a tool to fight back\, reclaim his story\, and respond to violence with imagination and art. \n \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE

SUMMARY:BØRNS with Two Feet & The Blue Stones - Live At The Bowl
DESCRIPTION:BØRNS\nINDIE88 GRAND SLAM CONCERT SERIES\nWITH SPECIAL GUESTS TWO FEET & THE BLUE STONES\nFRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25\, 2026\nABOUT BØRNS \nBØRNS creates from instinct\, not expectation. A natural-born performer with a voice that feels both celestial and grounded\, he first captivated listeners with Dopamine – his gold-certified debut album featuring the viral anthems “ElectricLove” and “Past Lives.” A decade later\, the songs haven’t aged—they’ve deepened\, mirroring the evolution of an artist more attuned than ever to his inner world. In recent years\, BØRNS has explored new corners of his sound with the independently released EPs Suddenly and Honeybee—intimate\, organic\, and sonically expansive bodies of work that reflect a more personal relationship with music itself. Far from a departure\, they were a continuation—expressions of the same creative curiosity that’s always driven him. Music made without compromise\, led by feeling rather than formula. Now\, with the announcement of a fall nationwide tour to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Dopamine\, BØRNS is reigniting his passion for live performance—and may offer glimpses of what’s next. Unconcerned with genre or trend\, whatever the future holds won’t be a pivot\, but another facet of an artist following his joy. This is a new era of freedom. Fully independent and artist-led\, every move is intentional—serving the artist first\, and the art that follows. \nABOUT TWO FEET \nFor most of Two Feet’s career\, he has bristled against the constraints of traditional pop songwriting\, the critic-approved respectability of the album format and the handed-down expectations of what a song should sound like. His bluesy\, bass-heavy first single “Go F*** Yourself” has no bridge and no hook\, but has earned almost half a billion streams to date. Pink (2020) does away with the chorus on many of its songs. Max Maco Is Dead Right? (2021) is a voyeuristic concept album based around a troubled fictional character and Shape & Form (2022) is an album he describes as an “eclectic mess.” In 2023\, he launched an independent label 477 Records to sign and collaborate with up and coming artists across the globe. \nABOUT THE BLUE STONES \nThe Blue Stones – vocalist and guitarist Tarek Jafar and drummer Justin Tessier – formed during their university days and inspired by the freedom of creating without boundaries\, grew from playing small-town bars to headlining iconic venues like The Troubadour in Los Angeles\, Electric Ballroom in London\, and The Danforth Music Hall in Toronto. Along the way\, they’ve racked up over 300 million streams\, four JUNO nominations\, and radio hits like Shakin’ Off the Rust\, which topped Rock charts in Canada and hit #5 on U.S. Mainstream Rock.

SUMMARY:Modern Seoul by Jon Lee
DESCRIPTION:Join Jon Lee for an intimate evening celebrating contemporary Korean cuisine through a thoughtfully curated multi-course menu\, set against live music from local musician Dale Ross. Jon’s approach blends flavours and ingredients that stay true to Korean cooking — some very traditional — with techniques and ideas borrowed from other cuisines. This isn’t fusion for its own sake: everything on the table is unmistakably Korean\, filtered through Jon’s own internationally-informed cooking style. Served family-style around a shared table\, this is an evening of bold flavours\, live music\, conversation\, and connection\, Modern Seoul is an invitation to slow down\, share a meal\, and experience the warmth of Korean hospitality.—– \nLotus BiteCrispy lotus root layered with a soy-marinated quail egg and cucumber kimchi. Jon thinks of this course almost as a stack of banchan in a single bite. Banchan are often described simply as Korean “side dishes\,” but that undersells their role at the table\, where they’re meant to interact with the meal\, lending acidity\, fermentation\, texture\, heat and balance to each bite. Here\, that idea is compressed into one composed dish: crisp lotus root\, savoury soy-marinated egg and bright\, fermented cucumber kimchi\, each distinct but built to balance one another. \nDoenjang OrzoCreamy orzo built around doenjang\, Korean fermented soybean paste\, with crispy pork belly and shimeji mushrooms\, finished with Parmigiano Reggiano. Probably the clearest Korean-Italian crossover on the menu — doenjang brings a deep fermented savouriness that works surprisingly naturally in the same role aged cheese or miso might play in a risotto. Rich\, creamy and very umami-forward. \nNaenggukA chilled Korean cucumber soup with radish\, nori and green onion. This one stays much closer to its Korean roots — light\, cold\, tangy and refreshing\, serving as a palate cleanser between the richer courses. \nYeoneojangSoy-marinated salmon sashimi served over rice with a rich egg yolk. Drawn from the Korean tradition of jang-marinated seafood\, where seafood is cured in a seasoned soy-based mixture — the salmon takes on a sweet-savoury depth while staying silky and delicate\, with the egg yolk adding richness once everything is mixed into the rice. \nInjeolmiJon’s take on the traditional Korean rice cake\, normally coated in roasted soybean powder. That nutty\, roasted flavour stays front and centre\, but paired here with pistachio and milk chocolate to turn it into an playful\, modern dessert. \n—– \nBOOK NOW! – $79 + HST – https://thedepanneur.ca/products/supper-club-modern-seoul-a-modern-korean-evening-with-jon-lee \n—–Jon Lee is the personal chef and owner of Aromas by Chef Jon. His culinary journey was shaped in two kitchens: professionally\, where he trained in Italian and European restaurants\, and at home\, where he immersed himself in the traditions and techniques of Korean cooking. These parallel experiences have shaped a style that respects classical technique while celebrating the vibrant flavours of his Korean heritage. Whether hosting a communal supper club or cooking in clients’ homes\, Jon believes food is at its best when it creates connection and conversation. @aromasbychefjon | aromasbychefjon.ca \n—–Drawing on the colourful lyricism of Paul Simon\, the earnest rock n’ roll of Tom Petty\, and the modern whimsy of Ben Howard\, Dale Ross is influenced by sound and style from across the decades. Born on the west coast of British Columbia\, and living in 4 provinces from west to east\, he has woven his way across the country and back more than a few times now\, crafting songs that tell of travel\, of real places and times and people. @dalerayross | dalerayross.com \n—–Every week\, The Depanneur invites Toronto’s best culinary talents to lead fun\, hands-on workshops and supper clubs. @thedepanneur
