SUMMARY:First Date: A Musical Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Their date is falling apart. Your night is just getting started! \nEveryone has a first-date story. This one has songs. First Date is a laugh-out-loud musical comedy about modern dating and a very awkward night out. When a nervous first-timer meets a confident serial dater\, a simple drink turns into a spiral of overthinking\, bad instincts\, and inner voices saying exactly the wrong thing! \nFunny\, fast-paced\, and painfully relatable\, First Date proves that sometimes the hardest part of finding love is simply surviving the first date.

SUMMARY:Wine in the Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:He tried to paint her. She transformed the canvas.\nHarlem\, 1964. As riots unfold outside\, painter Bill Jameson is inside his apartment putting the final touches on a portrait series about Black womanhood. When Tommy is brought in to model\, her presence begins to reveal the quiet hierarchies shaping the evening. As drinks are poured and conversation loosens\, the group is forced to reckon with how easy it is to repeat the very judgments they hope to rise above. \nBy turns funny\, intimate\, and piercingly intelligent\, Wine in the Wilderness is a landmark work. Directed by Jordan Laffrenier\, whose searing production of Slave Play was a highlight of last season\, this revival brings fresh urgency and emotional precision to Alice Childress’ razor-sharp portrait of seeing and being seen.

SUMMARY:The Nature Cure: paintings by Elizabeth Lennie\, Sept 24 - Oct 8
DESCRIPTION:“We were all so young. We were still our best selves.” Ann Patchett\, The Dutch House I noted this many years ago as I was working on an early collection of lake paintings. When my daughters were young they spent many summers at Camp Wabikon on Lake Temagami in the heart of Ontario’s wilderness. They would come home refreshed and recovered from the stress of the school year\, full of stories and adventures and a slew of new friends after their time in the forest and on the lake. I call it The Nature Cure. I believe they grew into a renewed understanding of themselves and their place amongst the interconnectedness of all living things while they were living in a cabin\, swimming in the early morning water and canoe-tripping the lake. Those images and the feelings of that time have been the engine of my practice as a way to keep the idea of the summer alive in my imagination.

SUMMARY:Kamiphony | Cybèle Young
DESCRIPTION:Koffler Arts welcomes Governor General’s Award winning artist Cybèle Young to the Koffler Gallery for the international debut of her exhibition\, Kamiphony \, curated by Zoë Foster. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a pantheon of kinetic paper machines. Over time\, each sculptural object performs a small\, repetitive action. Lighting and sound amplification accompany their movements\, creating a shifting tableau of motion\, dancing shadows\, and sound. \nThese kinetic sculptures are situated within a long tradition that has championed uselessness. From Aristotle to Baroque automata\, from Bruno Munari to Jean Tinguely’s anarchic sculptures\, philosophers and artists have repeatedly returned to this idea. By engaging with these historical debates\, Young invites viewers to consider our present-day predicament. The sculptures’ refusal to be efficient mirrors a contemporary moment in which we are re-examining the value of work as a result of COVID-19. \nFor Young\, this project is also deeply personal. She began creating the work in response to her experience of menopause\, during which her body felt as though it was “breaking down.” This experience inspired her to explore the space between what no longer works and something new that has yet to take form. \nThe machines’ repetitive movements foreshadow that something will – over time – emerge. Their persistence draws viewers into a public ritual where repetition itself becomes a form of meaning-making. In conceiving this work\, Young was also influenced by her great-uncle\, the composer Colin McPhee\, who\, while encountering ritual traditions in Bali\, observed that usefulness is not measured by output or progress but by duration and presence. \nAs visitors move through the exhibition\, the sculptural machines become a mischievous orchestra. They invite us to reimagine our world together and question its parts. \n– \nCybèle Young is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist and author. Her decades-long collaboration with Japanese paper anchors a practice concerned with transformation\, ritual\, and shifting perspective – from intricate paper miniatures to kinetic installations. Drawing from Dada\, Fluxus\, and the anthropology of play\, she builds poetic structures that unsettle the familiar. \nSince graduating from the Ontario College of Art & Design in 1995\, Young has presented more than twenty solo exhibitions and over thirty group exhibitions across Canada and internationally\, including New York\, Los Angeles\, London\, Oslo\, Singapore\, Beijing\, and Tokyo. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections\, including the Canada Council Art Bank\, Global Affairs Canada\, BMO Financial Group\, OMERS\, and Ernst & Young. She has received more than thirty grants and awards\, including the Governor General’s Literary Award and a Canada Council residency in Paris\, and is represented by Forum Gallery in New York and Los Angeles. \nHer practice continues to evolve through interdisciplinary projects\, bringing together sculpture\, movement\, sound\, film\, and participation. Kamiphony marks a significant new chapter in this ongoing exploration.

SUMMARY:Challah & Babka by Alissa Kondogiannis
DESCRIPTION:Challah & Babka are two of the greatest gifts of traditional Jewish baking\, and they share a remarkable secret: they use the same dough! It’s like the best 2-for-1 deal ever! Join Alissa Kondogiannis for this fun\, hands-on cooking class that will teach you the easy\, foolproof techniques to create perfect challahs and babkas at home. \nChallah — a golden\, egg-enriched bread that is often braided\, and typically eaten on ceremonial occasions such as Shabbat or Jewish holidays — has adorned tables since biblical days. Ideal for French toast and bread pudding\, challah is also the perfect bread with dips like hummus\, to mop up soups and stews or just to eat hot and tender\, straight out of the oven. \nBabka is a sweet\, twisted\, yeast-dough bread with Eastern European roots. Typically served as a dessert and the perfect accompaniment to coffee\, babka has transcended its humble roots and become a trendy staple in gourmet bakeries around the world. Classic babka is either chocolate or cinnamon-filled but can be made using any filling you can imagine\, savoury or sweet. \nIn this class\, participants will learn how to make the quick\, simple\, and forgiving yeasted dough that can be turned into either Challah or Babka. Each participant will have the option to make and braid their own challah or how to shape\, fold and glaze the babka to give it its signature marbled swirls and gleaming finish. \nThere will be plenty of oven-fresh challah to taste\, and just-baked chocolate babka to share in class. Each participant goes home with their own whole unbaked challah or babka to bake at home. \n—– \nBOOK NOW! – $79 + HST – https://thedepanneur.ca/products/cooking-class-challah-babka-by-alissa-kondogiannis-sep27 \n—–Alissa Kondogiannis has been eating challah her whole life but it was only after a travelling experience that she really got on the path of challah making. Her aim is to introduce everyone to the joys of bread making and and show that people don’t have to be intimidated by yeasted doughs. For the past several years she has facilitated challah making classes and has a small catering business of her own. @barnstarkitchen

SUMMARY:UP in Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Bowl at Sobeys Stadium present Disney and Pixar’s “UP” featuring a presentation of the complete film with Oscar® and Grammy®-winning composer Michael Giacchino’s musical score performed live to the film on September 27\, 2026. \nGiacchino’s score conveys themes of comedy and action-adventure\, embracing the emotional side with his sentimental “Married Life” suite\, which earned Giacchino his first Academy Award®. \nIn the Oscar-winning film directed by Pete Docter\, a 78-year-old curmudgeonly balloon salesman\, is not your average hero. When he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America\, he finally fulfills his lifelong dream of adventure. But after Carl discovers an 8-year-old stowaway named Russell\, this unlikely duo soon finds themselves on a hilarious journey in a lost world filled with danger and surprises.
