DESCRIPTION:Tanya Marcuse’s multichannel video Portent presents ominous scenes of the natural world—trees swaying in the wind\, vapour rising from volcanic fumaroles\, icy branches illuminated by flickering light\, and other small disturbances that hint at forces beyond our understanding. The quiet is deliberate; the frame remains fixed while the environment shifts restlessly within it\, evoking a tension between stillness and motion\, beauty and unease\, the known and unknown. \nMarcuse describes her work as an exploration of the kinship between disaster and the sublime\, and of the ways the world around us is continually threatened\, transformed\, and made strange. Portent forms part of her expansive series Book of Miracles (2020–26)\, inspired by the Augsburger Wunderzeichenbuch\, a 16th-century illuminated manuscript depicting natural disasters\, supernatural phenomena\, celestial spectacles\, and unexplained oddities. Like the fantastic visions of the original\, Portent’s tableaux slip toward the uncanny\, suggesting an anxious molting of nature—the instability of change into a new and unknowable state of being. \nCreated against our present-day backdrop of extreme weather\, political upheaval\, and the lingering disorientation of the pandemic\, Portent channels a heightened awareness of our entanglement with a rapidly changing planet. DESCRIPTION:September 9–December 5\, 2026Main Gallery & University GalleryCurator: Paul Roth \nFor nearly half a century\, celebrated American photographer Richard Avedon confronted one of portraiture’s enduring taboos: aging. From his earliest years at Harper’s Bazaar\, Avedon broke with the conventions of idealized celebrity portraiture\, revealing the marks of time on his subjects’ faces with unsparing clarity. Bringing together nearly 100 portraits made between the early 1950s and 2004\, the exhibition features artists\, writers\, musicians\, and cultural icons including Toni Morrison\, Gabriel García Márquez\, Duke Ellington\, Ronald Reagan\, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor\, Patti Smith\, Truman Capote\, and the Dalai Lama. Immortal also includes a restaging of Avedon’s seminal 1974 Museum of Modern Art exhibition Jacob Israel Avedon\, which chronicled his father’s final years in nine extraordinary portraits. SUMMARY:Madison Chow: Overflow
DESCRIPTION:The water has a body\, and so do I. A body as old as time itself\, one that has ebbed and flowed for longer than I can comprehend. Yet within the tradition of photography\, we have often constrained bodies of water and other natural elements to romantic fragments within their time. We halt them within the photographic moment\, failing to recognize water for its ephemeral and animate nature\, one that requires our dedication and time to understand. \nOverflow seeks to recognize picture as privilege by inviting water to be a collaborator in the photographic process. By using a camera-less medium\, the traditional colonial gaze of the lens is removed from the creation of the image\, allowing the water to take a leading role in its own imaging. To create these images\, I met the water at the shoreline\, often in the quiet of morning\, and arranged a composition that included nearby flora\, natural objects from along the shore\, or my own body. As the water rushed to meet the paper it slowly carved its features into the material\, aided by both natural and artificial UV light. Guided by intuition\, what emerged were vibrant self-portraits of one of Earth’s most dynamic elements\, existing as both abstract documentation of an uncontrollable force and a tangible record of the strong connection between myself and these bodies of water that have been forged over time. DESCRIPTION:As Haraway notes in When Species Meet\, technologies such as “Crittercams” are not neutral; they actively shape what can be seen\, known\, and imagined about animals. The microorganisms in Luk’s work are involuntary collaborators\, yet their movements\, gatherings\, and everyday “life doings become the meaning-making generators of the work itself.”1 \nWhile attempting to locate and study the elusive freshwater mussel – a critically imperilled species in Ontario and a vital contributor to the health of local aquatic ecosystems – Eunice Luk was astonished to discover\, within her water samples\, the intricate movements of an entire working culture of microscopic beings: feeding\, gathering\, colliding\, and drifting. As she kept these samples on the windowsill of her studio\, she witnessed the gradual reconfiguration of their new environment. Some organisms dwindled while others emerged. Algae thickened into dense clusters\, softening the rigid edges of the jar. \nThrough this sustained act of observation\, Luk cultivated an intimate knowledge of this micro-river and\, in turn\, a deeper spiritual connection to the lives the river contained. DESCRIPTION:“We were all so young. We were still our best selves.” Ann Patchett\, The Dutch House I noted this many years ago as I was working on an early collection of lake paintings. When my daughters were young they spent many summers at Camp Wabikon on Lake Temagami in the heart of Ontario’s wilderness. They would come home refreshed and recovered from the stress of the school year\, full of stories and adventures and a slew of new friends after their time in the forest and on the lake. I call it The Nature Cure. I believe they grew into a renewed understanding of themselves and their place amongst the interconnectedness of all living things while they were living in a cabin\, swimming in the early morning water and canoe-tripping the lake. Those images and the feelings of that time have been the engine of my practice as a way to keep the idea of the summer alive in my imagination.

SUMMARY:Kamiphony | Cybèle Young
DESCRIPTION:Koffler Arts welcomes Governor General’s Award winning artist Cybèle Young to the Koffler Gallery for the international debut of her exhibition\, Kamiphony \, curated by Zoë Foster. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a pantheon of kinetic paper machines. Over time\, each sculptural object performs a small\, repetitive action. Lighting and sound amplification accompany their movements\, creating a shifting tableau of motion\, dancing shadows\, and sound. \nThese kinetic sculptures are situated within a long tradition that has championed uselessness. From Aristotle to Baroque automata\, from Bruno Munari to Jean Tinguely’s anarchic sculptures\, philosophers and artists have repeatedly returned to this idea. By engaging with these historical debates\, Young invites viewers to consider our present-day predicament. The sculptures’ refusal to be efficient mirrors a contemporary moment in which we are re-examining the value of work as a result of COVID-19. \nFor Young\, this project is also deeply personal. She began creating the work in response to her experience of menopause\, during which her body felt as though it was “breaking down.” This experience inspired her to explore the space between what no longer works and something new that has yet to take form. \nThe machines’ repetitive movements foreshadow that something will – over time – emerge. Their persistence draws viewers into a public ritual where repetition itself becomes a form of meaning-making. In conceiving this work\, Young was also influenced by her great-uncle\, the composer Colin McPhee\, who\, while encountering ritual traditions in Bali\, observed that usefulness is not measured by output or progress but by duration and presence. \nAs visitors move through the exhibition\, the sculptural machines become a mischievous orchestra. They invite us to reimagine our world together and question its parts. \n– \nCybèle Young is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist and author. Her decades-long collaboration with Japanese paper anchors a practice concerned with transformation\, ritual\, and shifting perspective – from intricate paper miniatures to kinetic installations. Drawing from Dada\, Fluxus\, and the anthropology of play\, she builds poetic structures that unsettle the familiar. \nSince graduating from the Ontario College of Art & Design in 1995\, Young has presented more than twenty solo exhibitions and over thirty group exhibitions across Canada and internationally\, including New York\, Los Angeles\, London\, Oslo\, Singapore\, Beijing\, and Tokyo. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections\, including the Canada Council Art Bank\, Global Affairs Canada\, BMO Financial Group\, OMERS\, and Ernst & Young. She has received more than thirty grants and awards\, including the Governor General’s Literary Award and a Canada Council residency in Paris\, and is represented by Forum Gallery in New York and Los Angeles. \nHer practice continues to evolve through interdisciplinary projects\, bringing together sculpture\, movement\, sound\, film\, and participation. Kamiphony marks a significant new chapter in this ongoing exploration.
