REGENT PARK FILM FESTIVAL

REGENT PARK FILM FESTIVAL (To November 13) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNNNN

Sidling up to its more glamorous cousins, the Regent Park Film Festival enters its third year reaching further afield than ever. The idea has always been to root programming in the countries whose immigrants populate the east-side neighbourhood. Past years have put the spotlight on Africa and South Asia. This year it’s East Asia.

The free screenings unspool at Nelson Mandela Park Public School on Shuter, an Edwardian institution now overlaid with generations of immigrant culture. It’s the perfect place for films like Lester Alfonso’s Trying To Be Some Kind Of Hero to gain new resonance.

Alfonso leaves Canada for the Philippines, looking to solve the mystery of which American soldier fathered his own mother. In the process, he crafts a smart, snappy portrait of a woman striking her own deal with a probing camera.

The same holds true for A Certain Liberation, a complex close-up look at a Bangladeshi street woman who’s become productively crazy. (Nelson Mandela Park Public School, November 10-13)
