Return engagements

Hey, remember Kung-Fu Fridays? The idiosyncratic screenings of chop-socky classics and buried treasures that TIFF programmer and general happy-fun-time enthusiast Colin Geddes used to program at rep cinemas around the city? Well, Colin and his partner Katarina Gligorijevic took over programming duties at the Royal earlier this year, so it was only a matter of time before Kung Fu Fridays showed up on the marquee.

And that day has come: tonight (October 9) at 9 pm, KFF explodes into the Royal with The Invincible Kung Fu Legs, a 1980 martial-arts actioner starring Tan Tao-liang which Colin claims is “an ultraviolent version of Kiss Me Kate.” I can neither confirm nor deny this statement, but aren’t you curious? The show starts at 11:30 pm advance tickets can be purchased here.

Over at the Carlton Cinemas, they’re celebrating the spooky season all month with Saturday night horror classics – and tomorrow (Saturday October 11), Sean S. Cunningham’s original Friday The 13th splatters across the screen at 9 pm.

Now, I have never understood the appeal of the original Friday The 13th the series didn’t really come into its own until Jason Voorhees donned his iconic hockey mask in Part 3, and Jason himself is barely present in this one. But it still draws a crowd – maybe it’s because a young Kevin Bacon is one of the victims? – and this is your chance to see it with that crowd.

Still to come: Wes Craven’s original A Nightmare On Elm Street on October 18, and Tom Holland’s Child’s Play October 25. Popcorn is recommended but not essential.
