ROB CLUTTON BAND

ROB CLUTTON BAND Holstein Dream Pageant (Snailbongbong) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

There are no tunes explicitly about cattle here, but much of Holstein Dream Pageant is as wide-open as a country field. There’s an intriguing looseness to the jazz-based music Toronto bassist Clutton and his ensemble make, with each tune evolving as it grows. The opening track’s electronic clicks develop into a languid bit of guitar-driven lounge rock the standout tune, Moderato, begins with a probing bass solo before dropping into a percussion-laced melody that could be lifted from Don Cherry’s Brown Rice album and the disc closes with 12 minutes of improvised minimalism. The variety of sounds can be unsettling, but it’s a fascinating journey. Clutton’s band performs Sunday (January 26) at Artword Theatre.
