Chicago house heavyweight Roy Davis Jr. has an impressive resumé. As a young man he worked with the classic acid house group Phuture before switching over to a smooth and sexy Stevie Wonder- inspired deep house sound with which he’s had a string of successful anthems over the years, along the way accidentally giving inspiration to the UK-born 2-step sound. This is his first full album since moving over to Toronto label Nice + Smooth, and this time he’s moved even further toward that neo-soul sound. It’s nice, but he lacks a serious standout track. Roy Davis Jr. plays Saturday (July 17) at the Sunnyside Pavilion as part of Milk/RNB.
