Shaggy Lucky Day (MCA/BigYard) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
From the horrible Oh Carolina to It Wasn’t Me, Shaggy’s just been miss, miss, miss and hit. And for the generation who grew up watching the likes of Yellowman and Eek-a-Mouse at Sunsplash, it’s difficult not to view his reggae efforts as a cruel parody. Yet it’s also hard not to like Shaggy on some level — he’s just so darned affable. Lucky Day stays a little more on the low side of the Shaggy highs-and-lows meter. Centred around women, in all our glory, it’s an overproduced reggae/R&B collection — even Chaka Khan’s guest appearance is lacklustre. But some of it’s kind of fun, and you can’t help but feel the goodnaturedness shine through.
