SHAKIRA

I always think I like Shakira until I remember she has one of those horrible whiny voices and swallows her words, kind of like Alanis Morissette (ugh) or Chewbacca (or a whinier female wookie – I’ve nothing against Chewbacca). This record jumps from the Latin/Middle Eastern stuff that was Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 – which was more palatable because at least the rhythms were cool – to pop/rock with some disco, dance and even new wave reggae. The first few bars of ethereal choral stuff are okay, but then it goes bad and stays bad. I admire her attempt to mix genres and try something new, but I can’t stand that voice. I could also do without the clich&eacuted cover photo of Shakira as Eve in the Garden of Eden, complete with strategically placed leaves and apple and, to make it extra cheesy, a baby. Ew.
