Shannon and the Clams

SHANNON AND THE CLAMS at the Silver Dollar (486 Spadina), Saturday (June 15), 11 pm. NXNE wristband or $15. nxne.com.

Oakland doo-wop punks Shannon and the Clams’ new album, Dreams In The Rat House (Hardly Art), finds the trio sounding tighter than ever. But just because they’ve learned to play their instruments doesn’t mean they’ve mellowed out. Alongside rockabilly, psych and country influences, a mutant strain of twangy hardcore is now a major flavour in the mix.

Singer/bassist Shannon Shaw also plays with flamboyant glam-garage heroes Hunx and his Punx, which should give you an indication of the John Waters-informed bad attitude the Clams embrace. Try to resist the temptation to call them a girl group, as Shaw is the only woman in the band, and they’re not down with being reduced to that.

Plus, guitarist Cody Blanchard’s unhinged yelps are as much a part of their sound as Shaw’s soulful pipes.

If you like Shannon and the Clams, also check out Invasions at Silver Dollar, tonight (Thursday, June 13), 11 pm or Patti Cake at Rancho Relaxo, Friday (June 14), 9 pm, both NXNE wristband or $15.
