Soulpepper Theatre presents a play by Rosamund Small, based on the Edith Wharton novel Bunner Sisters. The powerful bonds of sisterhood are put to the test by a handsome visitor. Previews from Aug 23, opens Aug 29 and runs to Sep 16, see website for times. $32-$96.
Sisters Ann (Laura Condlln) and Evelina (Nicole Power) struggle to make ends meet as seamstresses while cohabiting in the back of their shop at the turn of last century. Their lives get interrupted when they meet German clockmaker Mr. Ramy (Kevin Bundy). Condlln carries the show as Ann: selflessly devoted to her sister yet always evolving. Although the play takes serious turns, supporting character Mrs. Mellins (Karen Robinson) stands out as comic relief and Robinson steals every scene with world-weary facial expressions and bon mots. Under Peter Pasyks delicate direction the production has a lyrical, dreamlike feel. Adapted from an Edith Wharton novella, Smalls script beautifully highlights the importance of female fellowship.
