Apparently, Belfast-bred Britrock crew Snow Patrol are huge in Japan. Who knew? I do now, after spending some time with the nicely assembled Live At Somerset House DVD, which includes a quaint home-movieish Japanese tour diary, videos, a U.S. tour film and a brief segment in which the five boys go home to hang with geezers in their local pubs, alongside the promised live footage at London’s Somerset House. Whew. It sounds like a lot, but it’s all quite repetitive – a series of artfully filtered shots of the gangly, scruffy-haired lads frolicking in fountains, soulfully strumming Teenage Kicks in front of an auditorium of rapt Japanese schoolgirls and generally hamming it up for the camera, all set to the same two or three anthemic ballads. I feel like it’d be fun to have a pint with singer Gary Lightbody, though I can’t say I learned much about any of the other Patrollers. The concert film has decent sound and lovely lighting, but the endless quick cuts between different cameras and angles made me a bit seasick.
Snow Patrol play the Kool Haus Wednesday (May 18).
