Soca
Soca Gold 2003 (VP/Virgin) Rating: NNN
Rating: NNN
Your tolerance for soca, the high-octane, triple-time bastard son of calypso, largely depends on how long you can put up with the sound of people having a ludicrously good time. Like dancehall, it can be an impossible genre to keep up with. Hit singles and favourite rhythms change day to day, making a collection like Soca Gold 2003 indispensable at this time of year. Admittedly, booty calls like Flo PG’s 2 Nasty, Krosfyah’s Ride It and Denise Belfon’s Wine An Bend Over leave little to the imagination, but that’s the point here. A tornado like Invasion’s Display might not be appropriate listening material 98 per cent of the time, but even the most jaded scenester would have a hard time keeping a straight face through Bunji Garlin’s ridiculously catchy Soca Bhangra.
