It’s not the typical survey of chart hits you might expect from a major-label release called The #1 Brazilian Album (out Tuesday). The involvement of Movement’s Dee Jay Nav ensures the inclusion of a few tasty dance-floor groovers by the likes of Sapoty da Mangueira, Burnier & Cartier and Zito Righi (!) that will be a pleasant surprise to sussed clubbers and deeper-digging samba-jazz fans. But even the more obvious song inclusions come with an unexpected twist like the charging run at Mas Que Nada courtesy of Oscar Peterson, and Wes Montgomery’s swinging revision of How Insensitive. The addition of a few modern classics like A Bossa Electrica’s Tombo In 7/4 and Salome de Bahia’s Theme Of Rio make the #1 Brazilian Album way hipper than it should be.
