by Gioachino Rossini (Canadian Opera Company). A barber helps a nobleman woo his true love in this Italian comic opera. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Opens Jan 19 and runs to Feb 7, see website for schedule. $35-$225, box seats $350.

MINI REVIEW

Joan Fonts commedia dellarte-inspired production is full of silly, often distracting elements that actually enhance this comic romp about the enterprising barber and his ploy to help a count woo a young woman being held captive by her lecherous guardian. The director and designers make the massive space come alive with colour and action. The cast, headed by Vito Priantes big, lyrical Figaro and Emily DAngelos smart, resourceful Rosina, is superb, and conductor Speranza Scappucci delivers a lively, spontaneous take on the familiar score.
