THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA

Rating: NNNN

The next best thing to experiencing the rousing voices of Clarence Fountain and his Alabama Blind Boys shouting a cappella is hearing them play off of the sensitive accompaniment of a small combo, as they do on Spirit Of The Century. Producer John Chelew, who favours in-the-raw documentation, calls in John Hammond, Charlie Musselwhite, Danny Thompson, David Lindley and Michael Jerome to add some bluesy tension to the mix, while the Blind Boys go about their sanctified business of reclaiming gospel testimonials secularizied by Tom Waits, Ben Harper and the Rolling Stones. You don’t need to be saved to be moved by this kinda spirit.
