THE D4

Rating: NNNN

THE D4 6Twenty (Flying Nun/Hollywood) Rating: NNNN

Real live rock ‘n’ roll muthafuckas signed with New Zealand’s quaint art pop exporters Flying Nun? Strange but true. The the D4 are the complete antithesis of the whole Flying Nun cerebral indie trip. The Auckland knuckleheads kick out the jams on this long-awaited domestic release of their 6Twenty debut (it comes with a bonus video track), which roars on a high-octane joy ride through the Detroit terrain of the Stooges and MC5 with shout-along “Oh yeah, oh yeah” choruses and handclapping kicks to spare. How very heartwarming to hear this sort of over-amped good-time foolishness coming from Flying Nun.

The D4’s wired performances rival those of fellow Kiwi kooks the Datsuns, so check out their Lee’s Palace takeover Tuesday (April 1).TIM PERLICH
