The Experimental Eskimos

THE EXPERIMENTAL ESKIMOS (Barry Greenwald, Canada). 70 minutes. Sunday (May 3), 9:15 pm, Isabel Bader May 10, 5 pm, ROM. Rating: NNN

Sending three of the best students in an Inuit community to Ottawa to live with foster families and be educated there was seen as a noble experiment designed to create leaders.

It worked – sort of. Peter Ittinuar became Canada’s first Inuit MP, and he and his cohorts, Zebedee Nungak and Eric Tagoona, fought hard for native rights during the constitutional debates in the early 80s. But their educational opportunity came at the price of their sense of identity and cultural belonging.

Director Barry Greenwald zooms in on the emotional centre of these stories, even if the pacing occasionally lags.
