Coal Mine Theatre presents a play by Florian Zeller (translated by Christopher Hampton).
A daughter becomes caregiver to her demanding father who exists in his own lonely and frightening world in this deeply affecting look at the realities of living with Alzheimer’s and being cared for by loved ones who are becoming increasingly unrecognizable. Previews from Feb 10, opens Feb 13 and runs to Mar 3, Tue-Sat 7:30 pm, Sun 2 pm. $42.50, previews $25.
In this absorbing and moving play, Andre (Eric Peterson), an elderly Parisian man living with dementia, is fed up with his caregivers, while his middle-aged daughter (Trish Fagan) is unclear how to best look after him. Zeller finds highly effective and theatrical ways (no spoilers!) to illustrate Andres disorientation, and Peterson, a late replacement, is riveting, capturing the mans charm, stubbornness and childlike anguish. Director Ted Dykstra, a fine supporting cast and superb design team have created a burnished production of a show that keeps us on our toes as we piece together the fragments of one mans life.
