Hennigs Stratford Fest hit tells the story of Katherine Parr (Maev Beaty), the resourceful, smart and beautiful woman who agrees on her own terms to marry Henry VIII (Joseph Ziegler). While the first act provides lots of set-up, and hence lacks momentum, the second in which Kate must fight for her life after she bruises Henrys ego is rivetting stuff. Beatys Kate, whether finding a sense of self-worth, developing friendships with her stepchildren or learning to love Hal, is warm and complex, while Ziegler is charismatic and quick to anger. A superb play and production.
