The Love Hall Tryst

After John Wesley Harding wrote a novel, Misfortune, based on his tune Miss Fortune, he thought it’d be novel to write and record some traditional-style British folk tunes inspired by his Dickensian romp. Only instead of hiring, say, Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy to do the 19th-century throwback concept up right, our budget-conscious Wes created the Love Hall Tryst with friends Kelly Hogan, Nora O’Connor and actor Brian Lohmann, who voice passable pastiches of his facsimilies of ye olde bloody murder ballads. Though she’s a capable stylist who’s proven her skill at creating the illusion of authenticity in various forms, even Hogan can’t keep this from coming off like a dreary high school recital after an all-night cram session with Berlitz Bluffers’ Guide To Britfolk tapes. Maybe it works better in period costume.
