THE PHILOSOPHER KINGS

Gerald Eaton’s voice is a beautiful instrument. Unfortunately, he uses it to sing really bouyant, poppy, clean, major-chord songs that sound designed to be danced to with a smile while drinking apple juice and wearing a colourful sweater. Breathy clichéd sentiments about how long he’s been waitin’, and there are so many things he should have said, but there’s no need to waste tears on him, because soon they’ll be walkin’ hand in hand, etc, run throughout this disc, sucking Castles dry of any meaning and prompting automatic eye rolls. Only seldom do some vaguely innovative parts rescue this from EZ rock land. Otherwise, it’s all very smooth sailing in pretty shallow waters.
