The Polyphonic Spree

Rating: NN

The downside of working with a choral pop ensemble like the Polyphonic Spree is that when the show is over and the matching gowns are hung up, all you’re left with is what’s inside the head of that former Tripping Daisy dude Tim Delaughter. There’s not much going on beyond the impressive spectacle, and that doesn’t translate in the recording studio. On Together We’re Heavy, Delaughter tries to turn each song into an epic according to a formula involving a quiet piano/vocal intro that builds to a crescendo of strings, horns and voices. The feel-good lyrics seem like an afterthought, as if lifted straight from greeting cards where love grows, lights shine, days are beautiful and everyone gets stronger. Rarely have such pleasantries been so painful.
