THE SKYDIGGERS

THE SKYDIGGERS Bittersweet Harmony Ltd. (Maple) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Bitter Sweet Harmony has the same ethos as Blue Rodeo’s classic Five Days In July — summery, expansive and unaffectedly Canadian. Weirdly enough, it was also recorded pretty much over the course of a week, which might be why the disc possesses a laissez-faire ease. Harmonies by Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson are great, giving the sweet rootsy pop songs added depth, but it’s the neat surprises that make this album sparkle — the unexpected 50s doo-wop on the song Elizabeth Josephine, the nifty glockenspiel twinkles on Fall Apart. Perfect for July road trips up Highway 7, trekking out to Muskoka and eating Blizzards from the Wendy’s at the roadside stops while you watch barns and bales of hay fly by outside the window.
