These remastered versions of the first two explosive Stooges albums – each repackaged with a bonus disc of alternates, different mixes and outtakes – not only present Iggy Pop rising to his confrontationally creative peak but also underscore just how mediocre most of his recent work has been. The Stooges’ self-titled debut, studded with proto-punk classics No Fun, I Wanna Be Your Dog and 1969, shows them wrestling pop radio conventions to a draw, whereas Fun House producer Don Gallucci allows them to stretch out. Magnificent sonic mayhem ensues, resulting in the triumphant ignoroid anthems TV Eye, Loose and 1970. None of the bonus tracks tops the released versions, but it’s instructive to hear Iggy freestyling lyrics as he goes. Those were the days.
