This Will Destroy You/Lymbyc Systym

Rating: NNNN

Plenty of people were disappointed when last-minute border issues quashed Lymbyc Systym’s Toronto date a few weeks back. Fans of the indie instrumental duo can find solace in their new split EP with fellow Texan post-rockers This Will Destroy You. On the first of two TWDY tracks, a calm layer of strings hides under massive, melody-topped mountains of noise, while subdued Freedom Blade explores pretty guitar interplay.

Lymbyc Systym open their half with Processed Spirits, a song that further blurs the line between indie and post-rock thanks to lo-fi 90s influences and poppy keyboard hooks. Notations, the strongest song on the split, showcases drummer Mike Bell’s intricate and bustling beats. No wonder they impressed Justin Peroff and the rest of the Broken Social Scene crew.
