Tiesto is arguably the most popular DJ in the world right now, but it’s still surprising that the 2004 Olympic Committee asked him to compose music for the opening ceremonies. And to think some people claim dance music is dead. Not all the tracks on this mix were specifically written for the Olympics, but they’re all by him and, love it or hate it, they’re all big fluffy trance anthems. One requirement was that there be no singing, as lyrics might be misunderstood and weren’t universal enough. That means the sugary pop side of big-room trance is less present than usual – a good thing in my book. Fans will love it, and it’s eclectic enough to ensure that trance haters won’t cringe too much. Tiesto plays at the Docks, Saturday (December 11).
