To tell the truth, I wasn’t expecting much from this album. Timo Maas is one of those superstar DJs, and generally artist albums by these types are poorly thought-out pop crossover attempts that rely so much on collaboration that they come across as second-rate compilations of last year’s sounds. In this case, though, the contrived eclecticism and reliance on guests has actually resulted in an interesting album. The dance-rock songs are surprisingly good, with Placebo’s Brian Molko providing some dark homoerotic lyrics, and the occasional references to modern UK hiphop and grime are also more successful than you’d think. The low points are actually the nods to big-room dance music: dated white-boy breakbeats, pompous atmospherics and trippy synth washes.
