Tis the season for Canadian whisky

Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye Whisky

Rating: NNNN

Why This modestly priced 95 per cent rye whisky blend was recently ranked best in the world by Whisky Bible author Jim Murray, to the ire of Scotch snobs everywhere. It’s very tasty indeed, lively and full with a gorgeous rye-driven bouquet. But does it deserve its lofty honours? You decide.

Gooderham & Worts Four Grain Whisky

Rating: NNNN

Why Paying homage to what was once the largest distillery in Canada and an important part of Toronto’s early economic success, this new Gooderham & Worts expression, a blend of rye, corn, wheat and barley, shows off its grain bill like a champ. With its palate of cinnamon apples and fresh baked raisin bread slathered in honey that takes a heavily oaked turn on the finish, it’s not an easy whisky to forget.

Price 750 ml/$44.90

J.P. Wiser’s Double Still Rye -Canadian Whisky

Rating: NNN

Why Canadian whiskies are busting out of their shell, not just being served with coke or ginger ale, but also in proper cocktails. Wiser’s new blend of copper-pot- and column-distilled rye and corn whiskies makes a nice sour. If you must limit yourself to a two-step mix, try it with ginger beer.

Price 750 ml/$29.90
