SUMMARY:Toronto International Storytelling Festival
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling Toronto presents the 2026 Toronto International Storytelling Festival! Our 48th annual celebration of the oral tradition of storytelling from whispered folktales to spoken word\, from memoir to myth\, the 2026 Festival celebrates the stories that connect us—seeking the common ground where truth and lives intersect. \nThe festival features storytelling from compelling Indigenous\, Canadian based and international experts alongside interactive events and workshops. International tellers include DANIEL MORDEN (Wales) RACCONTAMIUNASTORIA (Italy)\, and JACQUI DU TOIT (South Africa/Ottawa) Indigenous tellers include OZAAWAA and LENORE KEESHIG\, and Toronto-based tellers include MARIELLA BERTELLI\, ITAH SADU\, BRIANE NASIMOK\, QUEERS IN YOUR EARS\, and PARENT-CHILD MOTHER GOOSE PROGRAM. \nToronto International Storytelling Festival will take place in different venues across Toronto\, including the Palmerston Library Theatre\, First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto\, Wynchwood Barns Storytelling Toronto Studio\, Toronto Reference Library Atrium Lobby\, and The ArQuives. \n“This is my first year working with Storytelling Toronto and I am excited by the opportunity to program their flagship festival\,” says Justin Shaw\, this year’s artistic director. “What most excites me is the vast range in both genre and form in storytelling the festival has to offer – there’s a little something for everyone. But whether folk or personal stories\, I am most interested in experiencing the personal truth that draws the story to the teller – and I believe that personal truth isn’t bound by a form or genre. And in these divisive times\, common ground is valuable real estate.” \nTickets and full itinerary are available now at www.storytellingtoronto.org. SUMMARY:Before Borders
DESCRIPTION:Twist Gallery and Dreams Tree Community Investments and photography by Ryan Bolton and Yuma Dean Hester! \nWith no fixed itinerary\, we traveled north through Northern Alberta into the Rockies. We then ventured into the Yukon and the Northwest Territories in pursuit of the Northern Lights. What began as a road trip became an exercise in listening and being present. \nAlong the way\, we met with Elders\, Chiefs\, and storytellers whose histories are inseparable from the land. Conversations about memory\, responsibility\, and continuity — reminders that these landscapes are not empty expanses\, but living territories shaped by generations of knowledge and care. \nBefore Borders reflects on what it means to cross provincial lines while recognizing deeper\, enduring boundaries that predate them. The work considers travel not as an escape\, but as an exchange — guided by those who have called this land home since time immemorial.

SUMMARY:'Photo Diary' Exhibition - Karolina Kuras & Ted Belton
DESCRIPTION:On May 2026\, Album Studios (@album.studios ) and CONTACT Photography Festival (@contactphoto) unveil the works of internationally renowned ballet and fashion photographers\, Karolina Kuras (@karolinakuras) and Ted Belton (@tedbelton) in “Photo Diary”. \nThis 25-day exhibition brings together an intimate record of Kuras’ and Belton’s photography practices\, capturing discipline and grace in visual conversation. Both with special eyes for movement\, texture\, and contrast\, their photographs reveal how fashion and dance are connected practices\, through their vulnerable yet performative natures. \nThe presentation features curated photographs\, unified by a sense of experimentation with human expression\, varied creative processes\, and print materials. Central to the exhibition is the artists’ contemporary styles that naturally complement each other\, capturing discipline and grace in visual conversation. \nThe evening will include the artists in attendance and a panel moderated by Odessa Paloma Parker (@odessapaloma). Light refreshments will be provided. Photobooth hosted by Album EQ (@albumequipment) in Studio B. \nAdmission is free. Please RSVP via event website here. \nAbout the Artists:Karolina Kuras is a Toronto based ballet and portrait photographer. Internationally recognized as one of the foremost photographers working in ballet today\, she works at the intersection of classical ballet and fashion\, producing images that are precise\, elegant\, and entirely her own. A classically trained dancer herself\, Karolina brings an embodied understanding of movement and line to every shoot. On set she directs and shapes movement specifically for the camera\, ensuring each image is intentional rather than incidental. Having worked with some of the most celebrated ballet companies in the world\, her work is built on the trust of the people she photographs and a deep respect and understanding for the art form. \nTed Belton is a Canadian photographer living in Toronto and working internationally. His fashion pictures and portraits have appeared in titles such as AirMail\, Dazed\, Kinfolk\, and Rolling Stone. Ted’s interest in documenting individuals of exceptional character and style has brought him to the streets of Paris\, into the homes of eccentrics and socialites\, the studios of artists\, musicians\, and designers\, and to skate parks and fashion weeks around the world. Wherever he is\, Ted’s eye remains tuned to the quiet qualities of his subjects that he aims to amplify into memorable statements. \nAbout the Moderator:Odessa Paloma Parker is an award-winning writer\, editor\, stylist\, educator and brand strategist based in Toronto. She is the Art Editor at The Globe and Mail Style Magazine\, and in 2022\, she founded Opaloma\, an arts\, culture and style platform featuring stories from Toronto and beyond. Odessa is a co-author of the first edition of Louis Vuitton’s City Guide Toronto\, and her journalistic expertise has been acknowledged by a National Magazine Award nomination. Odessa is also an occasional DJ; her event clients include Chanel\, Bata Shoe Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario. \nAbout the Venue:Album Studios is a Toronto-based studio rental space for photographers\, film production\, and events. PetrosCurator: Gaëlle Morel \nThis survey exhibition celebrates the career of Montreal-based multidisciplinary artist Dawit L. Petros\, winner of the 2025 Scotiabank Photography Award. Spanning over 20 years\, this presentation of more than 80 photographs\, serigraphs\, and books traces a long-standing inquiry into the legacy of colonial history across Africa\, Europe\, and North America. Rooted in rigorous scholarly research and extensive travel\, Petros’s practice is defined by his creative use of archival photographs\, colour\, and abstraction. The artist challenges photography’s documentary function while investigating migration\, belonging\, displacement\, and the lingering effects of colonial memory. \nArtist Bio \nDawit L. Petros (Eritrean/Canadian\, b. 1972) is a visual artist\, researcher\, and educator. He holds an MFA in visual art from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University\, Boston. SUMMARY:Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me But Banjos Saved My Life
DESCRIPTION:Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me But Banjos Saved My Life by Keith Alessi is a charming\, autobiographical story of passion\, art\, and resilience. Neither an actor nor a musician by trade\, Keith was faced with a major cancer battle and\, in the wake of his brush with mortality\, chose to leave the world of corporate boardrooms behind to follow his long-delayed passion: playing the banjo. It was a pursuit that would ultimately help save his life. \nKeith is now on a mission to raise money for causes close to his heart and is donating his performance – and all proceeds from the event – directly to support Studio 180 Theatre’s ongoing work fostering compelling conversations on stage\, in the classroom\, and in the community.

SUMMARY:WERTHER
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Opera Company’s 2025/2026 season closes with Massenet’s Werther\, the company’s first staging of the opera in an all-new co-production with Opéra de Montréal and Vancouver Opera. Based on Goethe’s classic tragedy\, this rare operatic gem tells the story of a young man’s romantic infatuation and the spiral of despair that consumes him when his love goes unrequited. Renowned tenor Russell Thomas returns as the title character with Victoria Karkacheva making her COC debut as his love interest Charlotte. COC Music Director Johannes Debus leads the cast and COC Orchestra through Massenet’s sumptuous score\, which includes the famous stirring tenor aria “Pourquoi me réveiller.”
