Toronto St. Patrick’s Day parade just got cancelled

The annual St. Patrick’s Parade has been cancelled again due to COVID-19.

“The parade will not be going ahead next March to make sure the public is protected from the virus,” says a statement released Tuesday by Shaun Ruddy, chair of the St. Patrick’s Parade Society of Toronto.

“The people of Toronto’s safety and well-being must be the number one priority for city authorities, and the St. Patrick’s Parade Society fully supports the measures taken to avoid large public gatherings until the virus is under control.”

The announcement marks the second year in a row that the parade has been cancelled. The parade was one of the first events to be cancelled following the passage of social distancing measures last March.

The parade, which has been an annual event for more than 30 years, is one of the largest in the city, attracting more than 3,000 participants and thousands of watchers.

Ruddy says that many of the parade’s sponsors “have committed to continuing to support the parade… once we all have defeated the COVID-19 pandemic.”
