Weightlifting is a comeback for Scotland’s Trashcan Sinatras, who’ve been pretty much off the radar since the reaction to 96’s A Happy Pocket failed to meet expectations. Weightlifting is a collection of dreamy indie rock tunes, a large portion of which are ballads. Guitars jangle, keys chime and sometimes strings soar as Francis Reader croons goodnaturedly, alternating betwixt light airiness and melancholy. This is a completely earnest and genuine effort, the only drawback being that it’s a far too laid-back album to leave any indelible marks. But if you take the time to listen carefully, it may pay off. The Trashcan Sinatras play Lee’s Palace tonight (Thursday, September 23).
