VOICE

Reminiscent of Bahamadia, Eternia and Masia One, this N’awlins native puts out her debut at time when outspoken female MCs are more scarce than trustworthy political leaders. The pseudo-condescending Fantasy Pt. 1 opener is tragically comic: ‘I got ass, I got titties… / What do I want to see it on TV for?’ Voice goes on to establishes her identity over the 15 mutated Jazzmatazz-ish tracks. Moonstarr explodes on the multi-layered fudge of NeckSnap and the sparkling Babyboy, while Murr and Rose Kazi of LAL consistently deliver delicious vibrations. Alister Johnson contributes brilliance on Know Rhythm, while Total Eclipse is for every woman in hiphop fighting sexist second-class citizenship. Her run-on-sentence flow can dilute her flavour, but the Gumbo is good soul food.

Voice hits the Rivoli Friday (February 23).
