Album reviews Music

WELCOME

Rating: NNN

Welcome sound like a weird cross between late-60s psychedelic proto-punk and early-90s lo-fi indie pop, which, depending on where you are in your life, might sound like the best thing ever or something you’ll turn off after the first detuned guitar skronk and off-key vocal.

The best tunes are the ones bass player Jo Claxton sings, although her co-frontperson, Pete Brand, does a decent Syd Barrett impression for his contributions.

A bit too derivative for its own good, but the sloppy one-take immediacy is refreshing in an era when even the lowest-budget indie albums get Pro Tooled to death.
